Simple Home Made White Bread Recipe

This simple home made white bread recipe will teach you everything it says on the tin. It's absolutely perfect for everything from sandwiches to croutons to just plain chomping your way through a mound of bread and butter!


  • 500 g Plain Flour
  • 300 ml Water
  • 1 Dessert Spoon Caster Sugar
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • 7 g Yeast
  • Poppy Seeds


  • Sift the flour into a large bowl and mix it with the yeast, sugar and salt
  • Add the water and mix well
  • Remove from the bowl and knead to form a soft, springy dough
  • Clean the bowl, oil it and put the dough back in, allowing it to prove for an hour or until doubled in size, covered by a wet cloth
  • Collapse the dough and shape into a ball. Shape firmly.
  • On a sheet of baking paper on a tray, leave covered to prove for a further half an hour
  • Pre-heat an oven to 200c
  • Scatter poppy seeds over the loaf and make crisscross slices in the top
  • Bake in the oven for 20 minutes
